Never Ride Alone

,

It’s often said that we should never hit the trails alone. That’s actually a great rule. A lot can go wrong out there and being alone is not exactly setting yourself up for success. Although personal safety is something to look at, let’s start with the easy stuff, like a breakdown of your OHV or a recovery from something like mud or deep sand. Sure, you can get yourself repaired or unstuck if you’re properly prepared with knowledge and equipment, but almost in every situation things are better with a friend.

Personal safety is very important too. Things like an injury or breakdown can leave you stranded right where you are needing someone to engage just to find help. That is never the best scenario, especially when going out with someone is actually not a difficult thing g to figure out at all.

Let’s say you found a buddy to go offloading with, what are the best practices to keep you guys together and safe? Here are a few things to do with your wheeling buddy to stay safe and prepared for a day off on the trails.

*PREINSPECT OHVs – Do a quick check of your fluids, make sure nothing is leaking, check your brakes and brake lights. A properly working rig keeps everyone safe, having fun, and moving on the trail.

KEEP PROPER GEAR AT HAND – Make sure between you and your buddy or group there are proper tools and recovery gear between you and easily accessible.

*KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING – Knowing where you’re going is a safe practice anytime you travel. On the trail however, even if you do not have a destination, have knowledge of the area and trail. maps are great for this.

BE COMFORTABLE USING HAND SIGNALS – Hand signals is a universal way of communication that doesn’t require being able to hear the person you are communicating with. learn and use the signals whenever you can.

DRIVE OR RIDE RESPONSIBNLY – Keep your speeds and distances appropriate to your environment. Sometimes you can go faster than others, but never follow to close.

HAVE FUN – Of course the most important thing you can do is have fun! Do not compromise the other rules, but hitting the trails with a friend is always some of the best times of your life.
